Active shooter situations are unpredictable and dangerous. Quick, informed actions can save lives. The “Run, Hide, Fight” protocol is widely recommended by safety experts and law enforcement.

1. Run (Evacuate if Possible)

  • If you can safely exit the area, do so immediately.

  • Leave personal belongings behind.

  • Encourage others to follow, but don’t delay your own escape.

  • Call 911 as soon as you are safe and provide location, number of shooters, and description.

2. Hide (If Escape Isn’t Possible)

  • Lock doors, turn off lights, and silence phones.

  • Hide behind solid objects or furniture that can provide protection.

  • Stay quiet and remain out of the shooter’s line of sight.

  • Barricade entrances with heavy furniture if possible.

3. Fight (As a Last Resort)

  • Only attempt to confront the shooter if your life is in imminent danger and no other options exist.

  • Use improvised weapons (fire extinguishers, chairs, scissors) to distract or incapacitate.

  • Act aggressively and commit fully to your actions.

Additional Tips

  • Stay calm and make quick decisions based on your environment.

  • Follow law enforcement instructions immediately when first responders arrive.

  • Know multiple exits and escape routes in buildings you frequent.

  • Consider training in situational awareness, first aid, and defensive tactics.

๐Ÿ”ซ Tennessee Armed Security Guard Renewal – Key Steps & Requirements

๐Ÿ“… 1. Renewal Timing & Expiration

  • Armed security guard registration cards expire every 2 years from the date of issuance.

  • Renewals typically open 45 days before the expiration date.

  • It’s best to submit your renewal before expiration to avoid penalties.

๐Ÿง  2. Refresher Training & Firearm Qualification

To renew your armed guard registration, you must complete the following before submitting your renewal application:

  1. Four hours of refresher training with a stateโ€‘certified trainer.

  2. Firearm requalification:

    • Achieve a minimum score of 70% on a stateโ€‘approved silhouette target course.

    • This is required as part of the renewal process.

๐Ÿงพ 3. Renewal Application Process

When you’re ready to renew, you’ll generally need to submit:

  • Renewal Application: Complete the online renewal through the Tennessee licensing portal (e.g., CORE).

  • Proof of Training & Qualification: Documentation showing completion of 4 hours of refresher training and firearm qualification.

  • Headโ€‘andโ€‘Shoulders Photo: A current photo may be required.

  • Renewal Fee: The typical fee is about $85 for timely renewal of an armed guard registration.

๐Ÿ’ต 4. Fees & Late Renewal

  • Timely Renewal Fee: Usually $85 (subject to state fee updates).

  • Late Renewal: If you miss your expiration date, you may renew within a threeโ€‘month grace period by paying the renewal fee plus a late penalty (commonly $20 per month).

  • If more than three months have passed since expiration, you’ll typically need to reapply as a new applicant instead of renewing.

๐Ÿ”Ž 5. Additional Considerations

  • If you work at certain venues (e.g., establishments with alcohol licenses), extra refresher trainings may be required as part of your renewal prerequisites under Tennessee law.

  • Renewal eligibility also depends on maintaining good character and other statutory standards.

๐Ÿ“ Quick Summary

RequirementArmed Security Guard
Renewal Frequency Every 2 years
Refresher Training 4 hours minimum
Firearm Qualification Must requalify with 70% on approved course
Renewal Fee ≈ $85

๐Ÿ“ Where to Submit Renewals

Armed guard renewals are typically completed via the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance online licensing portal (often called CORE).

Tennessee “Dallas’s Law” is a state law that strengthens training and licensing requirements for private security guards and officers, especially those working at establishments that serve alcohol. It was enacted in response to the 2021 death of Dallas “DJ” Barrett in Nashville and aims to improve safety and professionalism in security services.

๐Ÿ“œ What Dallas’s Law Requires

Under Dallas’s Law:
• Security guards (armed and unarmed) working at businesses that serve alcoholic beverages must complete additional state-approved training before registration or renewal.
• Training includes de-escalation techniques, safe restraint procedures, first aid, CPR, and general obligations of a security officer.
• Unarmed guards renewing their registration after January 1, 2023 are required to complete two (2) hours of refresher training related to general guard duties.
• These training requirements must be delivered by a state-certified trainer or an approved qualified training provider.

๐Ÿ“… Why It Was Passed

The law was signed by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and took effect in 2023 following the death of 22-year-old Dallas Barrett at a Nashville bar, whose death was ruled a homicide after a restraint by untrained guards. The legislation aims to prevent similar tragic incidents by ensuring all security personnel are properly trained and certified.

โš–๏ธ Compliance & Penalties

• Employers and businesses must ensure their security staff have all required training and valid registration cards under Dallas’s Law.
• Non-compliance can lead to disciplinary action, fines, and potential liquor or beer license suspension for the establishment.

De-escalation is a critical skill for security officers in Tennessee, especially those working under licensing requirements from the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (TDCI), which regulates armed and unarmed security guards.

Whether you operate in Nashville, Orlando, or expanding statewide, strong de-escalation training reduces liability, injuries, and use-of-force incidents.

๐Ÿ”น What Is De-Escalation?

De-escalation is the intentional use of communication, presence, and tactical positioning to:

  • Reduce tension

  • Prevent physical confrontation

  • Avoid unnecessary use of force

  • Gain voluntary compliance

It is often the first and most important step in the use-of-force continuum.

๐Ÿ”น Core De-Escalation Techniques for Tennessee Security Officers

1๏ธโƒฃ Command Presence

  • Professional uniform

  • Confident posture

  • Calm tone of voice

  • Clear identification of role

Your presence alone can often prevent escalation.

2๏ธโƒฃ Verbal Techniques

  • Use the person’s name if known

  • Speak slowly and clearly

  • Give simple, lawful commands

  • Avoid sarcasm or threatening language

  • Offer options when possible

Example:

“Sir, I need you to step outside so we can talk privately. I want to make sure we handle this the right way.”

3๏ธโƒฃ Active Listening

  • Let the individual speak

  • Do not interrupt

  • Acknowledge emotions without agreeing to misconduct

Example:

“I understand you’re frustrated. Let’s figure this out safely.”

4๏ธโƒฃ Non-Threatening Body Language

  • Hands visible

  • Avoid aggressive stance

  • Maintain safe reactionary gap (6–8 feet when possible)

5๏ธโƒฃ Emotional Control

Security officers must:

  • Control ego

  • Avoid reacting to insults

  • Recognize signs of intoxication, mental health crisis, or emotional distress

๐Ÿ”น Legal Considerations in Tennessee

Under Tennessee law, security officers must understand:

  • Use of force laws (TCA 39-11-611 & 39-11-612)

  • Duty to retreat vs. self-defense principles

  • Armed guard liability exposure

  • Employer civil liability risks

De-escalation documentation is important in:

  • Incident reports

  • Use-of-force reviews

  • Court testimony

๐Ÿ”น Why De-Escalation Protects You

โœ” Reduces complaints
โœ” Protects your armed license
โœ” Lowers civil liability
โœ” Prevents injury
โœ” Improves professionalism

Many insurance carriers now encourage formal de-escalation documentation and training.

Less-Than-Lethal (LTL) Training is specialized instruction for security officers on safe and effective use of non-lethal force options such as OC/pepper spray, batons, impact tools, and other compliant devices. In Tennessee, armed and unarmed security guards benefit from LTL training to reduce the need for deadly force while maintaining safety and compliance.

๐Ÿ”น What “Less-Than-Lethal” Means

“Less-Than-Lethal” refers to force options designed to control or subdue a subject with minimal risk of death when used appropriately. Common tools include:

  • OC/Pepper Spray

  • Expandable Batons / ASP

  • Impact Devices (e.g., training batons)

  • Restraints (e.g., handcuffs)

  • Verbal & Physical De-Escalation Techniques

These tools, combined with proper training, help security officers manage threats responsibly and protect themselves and the public.

๐Ÿ”น Why LTL Training Matters in Tennessee

Security officers often encounter confrontations where non-lethal force is preferable to deadly force. Proper LTL training helps you:
โœ” Reduce injuries and liability exposure
โœ” De-escalate volatile situations safely
โœ” Meet industry standards and best practices
โœ” Document justified use of force when required
โœ” Enhance professional credibility

Training reinforces state laws governing use of force and self-defense, including when and how force may be applied.

๐Ÿ”น Tennessee Requirements & Considerations

Tennessee’s Private Protective Services regulations do not mandate specific LTL tools for all licensed security guards, but use-of-force training is required under rules like Dallas’s Law for alcohol-serving venues and general competence expectations. Security companies and venues often require LTL training as part of their standard operating procedures.

Licensed armed guards must already demonstrate safe handling and use-of-force compliance with firearms; including LTL options further strengthens your preparedness.

๐Ÿ”น What’s Covered in LTL Training

A comprehensive LTL course typically includes:
โœ” Legal foundation — use of force & Tennessee statutes
โœ” OC/pepper spray deployment & safety
โœ” Expandable baton handling and retention
โœ” Physical holds and control techniques
โœ” De-escalation principles integrated with LTL tools
โœ” Scenario-based drills
โœ” Documentation and reporting standards

๐Ÿ”น Who Should Take LTL Training

โœ” Unarmed Security Officers
โœ” Armed Security Guards
โœ” Security Supervisors
โœ” Venue Security Teams (bars, clubs, events)
โœ” Corporate and private security firms

๐Ÿ”น Benefits for Security Officers

  • Increased confidence in confrontational situations

  • Enhanced defensive capabilities

  • Lower liability and injury risk

  • Compliance with venue or employer policies

  • Professional development and certification

๐Ÿ“Œ What Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit Means in Tennessee

  • Tennessee refers to its top-tier handgun carry license as the Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit. Effective January 1, 2020, the older handgun carry permit became the Enhanced permit.

  • This permit allows you to carry any handgun you legally own either concealed or openly.

  • It is valid for eight (8) years before renewal.

๐Ÿ“ Differences From Constitutional (Permitless) Carry

  • Constitutional carry (effective July 1, 2021) allows most adults to carry a handgun (open or concealed) without a permit.

  • However, a carry permit — especially the Enhanced permit — still matters for certain legal benefits and reciprocity:

    • Carry in places that require “concealed firearms by permit only” signs.

    • Better reciprocity recognition in other states compared with no permit.

๐ŸŽฏ Main Benefits of the Enhanced Permit

  • Open or Concealed Carry — you’re not restricted to concealed carry only.

  • Greater reciprocity with other states than having no permit.

  • Recognized in many states that require a permit for carry.

๐Ÿง  Training & Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit you must:

  1. Complete a State-Certified Enhanced Handgun Safety Course

    • This is typically an 8-hour course that includes classroom instruction and range time.

    • The course covers gun safety, state law, self-defense principles, and shooting proficiency.

  2. Demonstrate Competence with a Handgun

    • Usually includes a written test and a range qualification as part of the course.

  3. Submit Proof of Completion with Your Application

    • The certificate from your training must accompany your application or be on file with the state.

  4. Certain Training Exemptions May Apply

    • Proof of military handgun training, POST certification, or other state-approved safety training may qualify in place of the class.

๐Ÿ“ How To Apply

  1. Start the Application Online

    • Go to the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security online portal and begin a carry permit application.

  2. Complete the Training (if not exempt)

    • Finish the enhanced handgun safety course before completing the permit process.

  3. Visit a Driver Services Center (or finish online if eligible)

    • Bring the required documents (proof of training, citizenship or lawful residency, identification) and pay the application fee — currently $100 ($65 for active or honorably discharged military).

    • Fingerprinting will also be part of the process.

๐Ÿ’ต Costs

  • Application fee: ~$100 (discounted to ~$65 for service members / honorably discharged).

  • Lifetime Enhanced Permit option: Available for an additional fee (~$200) and includes periodic criminal checks.

  • This training must cover topics set by Tennessee law and be completed before or attached to your renewal application.

  • If you work at an establishment that holds an alcohol license or permit, additional trainings (e.g., de-escalation, CPR, first aid, safe restraint) may also be required depending on your assignment.

๐Ÿงพ 3. Renewal Application Process

When renewing, you’ll generally need to submit:

  1. Renewal Application: Complete the online renewal form through the Tennessee licensing portal (e.g., CORE).

  2. Proof of Training: Certificate or documentation showing completion of the required 2-hour refresher.

  3. Head-and-Shoulders Photo: A recent photo may be required to upload.

  4. Renewal Fee: Approximately $70 for timely renewal of an unarmed guard registration.

๐Ÿ’ต 4. Fees & Timely Renewal

  • Timely Renewal Fee: About $70 (subject to periodic fee updates).

  • Late Renewal: If you miss your expiration date, you can renew within a three-month grace period by paying the renewal fee plus a late penalty (often ~$20 per month).

  • If more than three months have passed since expiration, you typically must reapply as a new applicant rather than simply renew.

๐Ÿ”Ž 5. Special Situations

  • If you’re employed at certain high-risk venues (e.g., alcohol service spots), extra refresher trainings can be required as part of the renewal process (beyond the standard 2-hour training).

  • Your renewal eligibility also depends on maintaining good character and adhering to other basic statutory requirements (e.g., no disqualifying convictions).
